Brand Strategy INDIA · 2026 EDITION How Can Luxury Brands Grow Organic Traffic Through SEO? The Sources Unlimited Case StudyBloomX
Your app can be genuinely better than every competitor in its category and still lose. It loses in the search results, before anyone has opened it, because someone else wrote a sharper title and shipped screenshots that answered the question in the user's head.
That's the uncomfortable part of app store optimization in India that teams keep rediscovering.
We've watched fintech teams pour a full quarter's budget into user acquisition while their Play Store short description still reads like a mission statement. The paid installs came. The organic ones didn't, because nothing in the listing told Google's index what the app was for.
Here's the checklist we work through, and the reasoning behind each item.
App store optimization is the practice of improving an app's ranking and install conversion rate inside Google Play and the Apple App Store. It works through four levers: indexed metadata, store creative, ratings and reviews, and technical health signals like crash rate and retention. In India, where Android dominates, the Play Store carries most of the weight.
Start with the split. Android runs on the overwhelming majority of Indian smartphones, so for almost every Indian app, the Play Store is the main battlefield, and iOS is the smaller, higher-value one. Your effort should be weighted accordingly, and most teams weigh it the other way round because their investors use iPhones.
Then there's how people actually search. An Indian user looking for a loan app might type "instant loan," "loan app without salary slip," "turant loan," or a mix of Hindi words in Latin script. Code-mixed queries are normal here, not an edge case. If your listing only contains polished English, you're invisible to a large share of intent.
Device reality matters too. App size, cold start time, and crash rate on entry-level Android hardware feed directly into retention, and retention feeds into ranking. A bloated APK is an ASO problem wearing an engineering costume.
The comparison above holds the core structural difference: Play gives you three indexed text fields, and Apple gives you four much smaller ones, one of which users never see.
The ASO vs SEO comparison gets made all the time badly, so let's be precise about it.
What you already know from SEO | Does it transfer to ASO? |
Keyword research and intent mapping | Yes, directly |
Titles carry the heaviest ranking weight | Yes, on both stores |
Conversion rate feeds ranking | Yes, and faster than in SEO |
Trust signals compound over time | Yes, ratings replace backlinks |
Long-form content ranks | No. Apple indexes no long description at all |
Thousands of words of real estate | No. Apple gives you 160 indexed characters total |
Results take weeks to read | No. Store experiments return signal in days |
The last row is the one that changes how you work. A ranking change on Google can take weeks to show. A store listing experiment on Play can give you a conversion signal in days, which means ASO rewards teams who test constantly rather than teams who plan perfectly.
Element | Google Play | Apple App Store |
Title / app name | 30 chars, indexed | 30 chars, indexed |
Short description / subtitle | 80 chars, indexed | 30 chars, indexed |
Long description | 4,000 chars, indexed | Not indexed for search |
Hidden keyword field | None | 100 chars, indexed |
In-app purchase names | Not a primary signal | Indexed |
Per-language keyword field | Separate listing text per locale | Separate 100 chars per locale |
A/B testing tool | Store Listing Experiments | Product Page Optimization |
Behavioural ranking signals | Installs, uninstalls, retention, Android vitals, review text | Downloads, rating count, rating velocity |
Both platforms publish their own guidance on this, and it's worth reading first-hand rather than through a summary. Google documents store listing requirements inside Play Console, and Apple explains how App Store search works in its App Store product page guidance.
Work through this in order. Each item assumes the one above it is done.
Metadata, Google Play
Brand name alone in the title loses to brand name plus a keyword, every single time. The short description matters more than most teams assume because it carries real indexing weight and it's the line users read before deciding whether to scroll.
Metadata, Apple App Store
That last item is free inventory. It's a completely distinct 100 characters, and almost nobody uses it.
Creative
Ratings and reviews
Play treats review text and developer responsiveness as ranking inputs, which most Indian teams ignore entirely.
Technical health
Experiments
Guessing is expensive and testing is free.
Build your keyword set from three buckets, not one.
Category terms are what everyone chases. Examples: astrologer, kundli, loan app, personal loan. These are non-negotiable for relevance, but you won't outrank hundred-million-download incumbents on them this year. Include them, then stop expecting them to deliver installs.
Transliterated and regional terms are where the actual gap sits. Examples: rashifal, panchang, muhurat, turant loan, udhar, paisa. These carry real volume in India and far fewer apps optimize for them properly.
Long tail intent terms are your fastest wins. Examples: loan app without CIBIL check, kundli matching for marriage, SIP calculator with goal planning, instant loan for students. Lower volume, much higher conversion, and they're winnable inside ninety days.
The pyramid narrows upward for a reason: category terms sit at the top because they're the smallest realistic share of your install volume in year one, and long-tail terms sit at the base because they carry it.
Pull your real data from Play Console's Search terms report and App Store Connect rather than trusting any third-party volume estimate. Store-side data is the only source that reflects what users actually type into the store.
Hindi is the obvious second locale. It's rarely the last one worth having.
Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Kannada and Gujarati each get their own App Store locale, which means each one carries its own 100-character keyword field and its own name and subtitle. On Play, each locale gets its own full listing text. For an astrology app, panchang and muhurat queries skew heavily regional. For fintech, loan and payment intent shows up in regional scripts far more than English-first teams expect.
The practical rule: localise the locales your support and product can actually serve. A Tamil listing that drives installs into an English-only app raises uninstalls, and uninstalls cost you ranking.
Play Store ranking is not a text matching exercise. Once you're relevant, behaviour decides placement.
Install velocity tells Play whether interest is accelerating. Uninstall rate tells it whether the install was a mistake. Retention at day one and day seven tells it whether the app is worth recommending to the next user. Crash and ANR rates tell it whether recommending you is risky.
This is why a campaign burst without a retention fix can actively hurt you. You buy installs, users churn within a week, and Play reads the whole pattern as a low-quality app. If you're running paid acquisition alongside an unfixed listing, our performance marketing team will tell you the same thing: the leak costs more than the traffic.
Fix the leak first. Then open the tap.
Four numbers tell you whether any of this is working. Track them weekly, in this order.
Store listing acquisition conversion rate. Play Console reports store listing visitors and installs. This is the single fastest-moving number after a creative or metadata change, and it moves within days.
Keyword rank across your tracked set. Eight to twelve terms, split across the three buckets above. Fewer and you have no coverage. Moreover, you can't tell which change caused which movement.
Impressions and search-driven installs. Play Console's Search terms report and App Store Connect both split organic search from browse and referral. If impressions rise but installs don't, the problem is creative, not keywords.
Uninstall rate and day seven retention. These are your ranking floor. A listing that converts strangers who churn in a week will lose rank faster than a weak listing that converts fewer, better-matched users.
Set your baseline before you change anything. Most teams skip this, then can't prove what worked.
Fintech teams over-index on compliance language. The listing reads like a disclosure document because legal reviewed it and growth didn't. Regulatory accuracy and a benefit-led first line can coexist, and the first line is what decides whether anyone reads the rest.
Astrology apps make the opposite mistake. The positioning drifts. We've audited listings where the Play Store called an app an astrologer consultation product while the App Store subtitle described a personal growth tracker. Two stores, two identities, and an algorithm on each side with no idea what to rank the app for. You can see how we approach this kind of positioning work across our client case studies.
Pick one identity. Say it in the title, the subtitle, the first screenshot, and the first line of the long description. Consistency across surfaces is worth more than clever copy on any single one.
App store optimization in India is a compounding asset. Paid installs stop the day the budget stops, but a listing that ranks keeps delivering after the campaign ends.
Start with the metadata, because it costs nothing and moves fastest. Then fix retention. Then test creativity. Do that for a quarter, and the store starts working for you instead of against you.
If you want a second pair of eyes on your listing before you commit the next quarter's budget, that's the kind of work we do every week. More growth playbooks sit in our blog library.
