Performance Marketing INDIA · 2026 EDITION Google Ads for Education: How Kaabil Kids Improved Sales Qualified ConversionsBloomX EditorialPerformance Marketing📅 September
You've just paid for your first website. The design looks sharp, the copy reads well, your developer delivered on time. Then three months pass and your analytics show 41 visitors, half of them your own team.
This happens constantly to startups and small businesses across India, and the cause is almost always the same. Nobody built the site around what people are actually typing into Google.
Keyword research is the fix. It costs nothing to start, and it changes what you build before you spend money building it. This guide covers what keyword research for beginners actually involves, which free and paid tools earn their place, and how to tell a keyword that brings buyers from one that only brings traffic.
Keyword research is the work of finding out what your customers type when they want what you sell, then measuring how many of them do it and how hard it'll be to show up for it.
Three numbers matter. Search volume tells you how many people look for that phrase each month. Keyword difficulty estimates how much authority you'll need to rank on page one. Search intent tells you why someone typed it, and that's the number most beginners ignore.
Intent falls into four buckets. Someone searching "what is vastu" wants information. Someone searching "vastu consultant near me" wants to hire. Someone searching "best vastu consultants in Mumbai" is comparing options before they pick. Someone searching your brand name already knows you.
Build your homepage around informational keywords and you'll get readers who never buy. Build it around buying intent and a smaller number of visitors turns into actual enquiries. That distinction alone is worth more than any tool subscription.
Short keywords look tempting. "Home decor" has a huge volume in India. It also has ten years of established e-commerce brands sitting on page one, and you won't move them with a new site and a modest budget.
Long tail keywords are the longer, more specific phrases underneath. "Luxury lighting store in Mumbai" instead of "lighting". "Certified yellow sapphire online" instead of "gemstones". Fewer searches each month, far less competition, and much clearer intent.
Here's the maths that convinces most founders. A head term with 50,000 monthly searches might send you nothing for two years. Thirty long tail phrases at 200 searches each add up to 6,000 monthly searches you can realistically win inside six months, and the people behind those searches are closer to buying.
Startups should start here. Always.
You don't need a paid subscription to do your first round of research.

Pricing shifts often, so check current plans before you commit. Mangools generally sits around the price of one team lunch a month, while Ahrefs and Semrush entry plans run several times that.

If you're budgeting for a website and haven't launched yet, Keyword Planner plus Search Console will carry you for months. Move to a paid tool when you need to see what your competitors rank for, because that's the one thing free tools can't tell you.
Step 1. Write down how customers describe you. Not your industry jargon. Pull the actual words from your WhatsApp enquiries, sales calls and Instagram DMs. This list is your seed.
Step 2. Expand each seed. Drop them into Keyword Planner and collect every related phrase with a searcher who could plausibly buy from you.
Step 3. Tag every keyword by intent. Informational, commercial, transactional, branded. Do this in a spreadsheet. It takes an hour and saves you from building the wrong pages.
Step 4. Check who's already ranking. Search your top keywords manually. If page one is full of national brands and Amazon listings, park that keyword and go longer tail.
Step 5. Map keywords to pages. One primary keyword per page. Service pages take transactional terms, blogs take informational ones, category pages take commercial comparisons. Two pages fighting over the same keyword means neither wins.
Step 6. Track and revisit quarterly. Search Console will show you queries you never planned for. Those are free ideas, and they're usually your best-converting ones.
Two of our clients show what happens when the research comes first.
For Opulin, a luxury home décor brand with strong offline standing but almost no digital presence, we started with premium buying-intent queries like "luxury furniture brands in India" and "luxury lighting store in Mumbai". That research shaped an SEO-first blog library of 25+ articles, and 6+ of those blogs reached page one and page two of Google. Opulin now has visibility across 90+ luxury-related keywords, including brand-specific searches like Fiorwood and Rometti that competitors weren't even tracking.
For GemsMantra, Astro Arun Pandit's certified gemstone brand, keyword intent drove the paid side too. Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns targeted people already searching for certified gemstones and Rudraksha rather than broad astrology terms, and the same intent mapping extended to NRI markets across the US, UK, Canada, Australia, UAE and Singapore. The account delivered a 4.9X return on ad spend.
Same principle in both. Find the demand, then build for it.
Keyword research isn't the glamorous part of building a website. It's the part that decides whether the glamorous parts ever get seen.
Open Keyword Planner this week. Write down twenty phrases your customers actually use. Tag them by intent, check page one for the top five, and you'll already know more about your market than most of your competitors do.
If you'd rather have someone map it properly before you spend on a site, that's the work we do every day.
