Your car breaks down on the Western Express Highway at 9 p.m. Smoke is coming from the bonnet, horns blaring behind you, and your phone is at 18%.
Do you open Instagram and wait for a towing company to appear in your feed?
Of course not. You open Google and type "towing service near me."
That one moment explains the whole Google Ads vs Meta Ads debate better than any spec sheet. Most business owners pick a platform because a competitor uses it. That's the costliest mistake you can make with an ad budget. The question that matters is about intent: does your customer already know they need you, or do you have to show them first?
Google Ads captures demand. Meta Ads creates it. Once you see that difference clearly, deciding where your money goes gets a lot simpler.
Copying a competitor's channel mix feels safe. It isn't.
Think of a dental clinic in Andheri and a skincare brand shipping across India. Both run ads. The dental patient has a throbbing toothache and searches for help right now. The skincare buyer is scrolling Reels at 11 p.m. with zero plans to buy anything, until a creator shares a morning routine that makes them stop and watch twice.
Same budget. Opposite psychology.
Swap their strategies and both lose.
So before you compare cost per click or audience sizes, map one thing: where does your customer's journey start?
Google Ads puts your business in front of people who are already looking. The need exists before your ad does. The customer has a problem, has decided they want a solution, and is ready to pay for it. Your job is simply to be the answer they find first.
Go back to the broken car. When someone searches for "mechanic near me" or "24 hour towing Mumbai," the problem is urgent, the solution is clear, and the wallet is open.
That's why search advertising works so well for:
There's a catch, though. Google can only capture demand that already exists. If nobody searches for your product, no bidding strategy will make them start. You're fishing in a pond with a fixed number of fish.
Meta Ads work in the opposite direction. Nobody wakes up thinking, "Today I need a bomber jacket from a D2C brand I've never heard of." There's no search to capture.
Here's what happens instead. Someone is scrolling Instagram and sees a creator wearing that jacket on a cold evening in Manali. The fit looks sharp. They picture themselves in it at a friend's December wedding, and a quiet thought forms: I could look like that. Two or three ads later, they tap "Shop Now."
Meta didn't answer a question. It planted one. That's why Meta campaigns and influencer marketing so often work as a pair.
That's demand creation, and it's why Facebook and Instagram ads suit:
Meta targets people by interests, behaviour and lookalike audiences rather than keywords. That means your creative does most of the heavy lifting. A weak visual on Meta is like a shop with its shutters half down. If Instagram is your main channel, our guide on growing on Instagram beyond just posting Reels breaks down which ad formats suit which goals.
Factor | Google Ads | Meta Ads (Facebook + Instagram) |
Buyer mindset | Actively searching for a solution | Passively scrolling, not shopping |
What triggers the ad | Keywords the person types | Interests, behaviour and lookalike signals |
What wins | Relevance, ad copy and landing page match | Scroll-stopping creative and storytelling |
Funnel stage | Bottom of funnel, close to purchase | Top and middle of funnel, discovery |
Best fit | Urgent needs, services, known products | Visual products, new launches, D2C brands |
Main limitation | Capped by existing search volume | Needs strong creative and more touchpoints |
Neither platform is better in general. One is better for your customer's intent. Before you spend another rupee, answer these four questions honestly.
Do people already search for what you sell? Healthy search volume for your core terms means Google deserves a budget first.
Is your product visual or emotional? If people buy it for how it looks or how it makes them feel, Meta will usually find buyers faster.
Is the purchase urgent? Urgency favours Google. Discovery favours Meta.
Are you launching something new? A brand-new category has no search demand yet. You'll have to create it before there's anything to capture.
Many growing brands end up using both, in sequence. Meta introduces the brand and people start recognising the name. Later, those same people search for it on Google, and branded search ads catch them at the finish line. We ran Google and Meta side by side for luxury home decor brand Opulin, and you can see how that campaign came together. Once a brand reaches some scale, the PPC vs social media ads question stops being either/or. It becomes a question of proportion.
A local service business will usually lean heavily toward Google. A new D2C label will often lean toward Meta. We're wary of anyone who quotes a fixed split without seeing your numbers. The right mix shows up through disciplined performance marketing testing.
If your customer is already searching, meet them on Google with a sharp answer. If they don't know they want you yet, go to Meta and show them what they're missing.
Get the intent right and the platform choice makes itself. Get it wrong and even a great campaign will feel like shouting into the wrong room.
