Graphic Design INDIA · 2026 EDITION How Kuku FM Built a Distinctive Brand Through Strategic Creative ThinkingBloomX EditorialGraphic Design📅 October
An audio app has an odd problem. Its best product can't be seen.
Kuku FM had more than 10 million users and a deep library of vernacular, long form audio across motivation, personal finance, fiction, self help and learning. Listeners who pressed play tended to stay. The trouble happened before that tap. On an app store shelf or inside a crowded ad feed, people decide whether a show is worth their time by looking at it, and Kuku FM's visuals weren't doing the audio justice.
In 2024, Kuku FM partnered with BloomX to fix that first impression. We built a thumbnail design strategy around genre, emotion and scale. The outcome was a 2X increase in CTR on promoted podcast creatives, 40% better listener retention in new categories, a 5X improvement in discoverability across app and ad ecosystems, and 20% more engagement in performance marketing campaigns.
Here's exactly how we did it, and what you can borrow for your own brand.
Kuku FM is one of India's fastest growing audio content platforms.
It's a B2C brand built on a simple idea: Audio can be the next mass medium for both learning and entertainment, as long as it's accessible and feels personal to Indian listeners.
The platform's mission is to empower creators and lift diverse, high quality audio content into the mainstream. That means hundreds of shows competing for attention across very different moods. A finance listener and a thriller fan want completely different things, yet both find Kuku FM through the same small rectangles on their phone screens.
So the question we started with was simple. What does a great audio show look like?
Kuku FM's content was strong and its user base was growing. The weak point sat right at the visual discovery stage, where a new listener first meets a show. We identified four problems.
Weak visual recall. As an audio first platform, Kuku FM didn't have compelling visuals that represented the richness of its library. Shows were hard to remember by sight.
Low engagement in visual ecosystems. Ad formats and app stores are visual marketplaces. Design drives the click there, and Kuku FM struggled to stand out next to brands built for the eye.
Underperforming thumbnails. The existing thumbnails didn't attract clicks or reflect how deep the content really was. That showed up as low CTR and weaker retention.
A scalability gap. The library was expanding fast, and there was no system to scale design across categories while keeping the brand consistent.
We summed it up for the team in one line: In audio, sound builds loyalty, but visuals drive discovery. Kuku FM didn't need better audio. It needed design that earned trust and recall before the first second of sound.
We didn't start with colours or fonts. We started with listeners.
Our team mapped audience behaviour and genre wise patterns to understand what each type of listener responds to emotionally. A person browsing personal finance shows is looking for credibility. Someone scrolling fiction wants a hook and a hint of drama. Those are different jobs, so the thumbnails had to do different work.
From that research we built genre specific frameworks:
Career and personal finance: Clean, trustworthy designs that put expertise front and centre.
Fiction and drama: Bold visuals with expressive character cues that suggest a story is about to unfold.
Self help and motivation: Uplifting tones with energetic colour palettes that match the listener's intent to feel better.
Learning and education: Clear, structured layouts that signal clarity and knowledge at a glance.
Each framework matched a listener's mindset at the moment of choice. That alignment is what lifted click through rates, built trust and made content easier to discover across the app.
Strategy only matters if the execution holds up on a five inch phone in bright sunlight. Our creative team developed eye catching thumbnail sets that balanced two stories at once: Kuku FM's brand story and each show's own story.
We kept a consistent colour palette and typography aligned with Kuku FM's identity, so every thumbnail felt like it belonged to the same family. We integrated creator visibility and emotional hooks, because listeners connect with voices and faces, and a familiar creator on a thumbnail builds instant relatability.
Every design was optimised for readability across screen sizes. Titles had to stay legible on a small mobile card and still look sharp on desktop. That focus on accessibility kept engagement high across devices and pushed overall click through rates up.
If you run a content brand, test your thumbnails at their smallest real size. What looks great in a design file often turns into noise in a feed.
One beautiful thumbnail is easy. Five hundred consistent ones is the real challenge.
Kuku FM was adding new shows constantly, so we designed a modular template system that its internal teams could run without us. It had reusable frameworks for faster execution, so designers weren't starting from a blank canvas each time. It set visual hierarchies that guided category wise differentiation, so a finance show and a drama never looked confusingly alike. And it was flexible enough for new shows and campaigns without breaking consistency.
This gave Kuku FM's team speed and brand recall together. Production could scale with the library, and every new release still looked unmistakably like Kuku FM.
Design is easy to call subjective. These numbers aren't.
The headline result was a 2X increase in CTR on promoted podcast creatives. Twice as many people who saw a promoted show chose to tap on it, which means the same media spend did far more work.
Listeners also stayed longer. Kuku FM saw 40% better listener retention in new categories, a strong sign that the new thumbnails set honest expectations. When the visual matches the content, the people who click are the people who stick.
Discoverability jumped too, with a 5X improvement in discoverability across app and ad ecosystems. Shows that used to blend into the background now held their own on app store shelves and inside ad placements.
Finally, performance marketing got a lift, with 20% more engagement in performance marketing campaigns. Better creatives fed better campaign signals, and that compounding effect is where design and paid media start working as one team.
You don't need Kuku FM's scale to use these lessons. If your product is audio, video, courses or any content people can't preview instantly, your thumbnail is your storefront.
Start by grouping your content by listener intent rather than by internal category names. Design a visual language for each intent. Build templates so your team can move fast without drifting off brand. Then measure CTR and retention together, because a thumbnail that gets clicks but loses listeners is only half working.
Which of your shows would get twice the clicks tomorrow if it simply looked as good as it sounds?
For an audio first brand, visual design is the gateway to discovery. Our creative partnership with Kuku FM turned thumbnails into trust signals, so every show's first impression matched the quality of its audio.
With a scalable, design-first system now in place, Kuku FM has strengthened listener trust and user engagement. It's well positioned to grow its audience and keep leading India's audio storytelling revolution.
If your brand has great content that isn't getting the clicks it deserves, we'd love to look at your creatives with you.
